KatieH

Hi everyone! I'm "KatieH" I'm majoring in New Media Studies. I plan on Graduating some time at the end of 2011. I am a Program Manager at Deltakedu, a company that handles the online accounts for virtual campuses. I am very passionate about networking and connecting the right people together to create fantastic outcomes. My favorite TV character is Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I'd like to have many questions answered by the end of this course, but off the top of my head, I'd like to know how to incorporate video clips into my websites.

*I also am curious to find out how to create log-ins for pages, and learn about the metrics behind counting the amount of traffic to your site.

Week 3 Tech corner overview:

What is Open Source

  • Open Source is a term used to describe software that is available to anyone who wishes to use it at no cost. How the program was created, and the source code is available to the user as well. This means if you would like to modify the software or change it in any way, you are able, and encouraged to do so.

    The Open Source Initiative

  • The open source initiative is a public benefit corporation, who’s main goal is to promote awareness of open source software.

  • Open source doesn’t just mean access to the source code, it also must meet criteria set in place by the OSI. In short, the software must basically be openly available to everyone and have no specific licensing and redistribution rules.

Negative of Open Source

  • Because customization and modification is encouraged with Open Source software, there is no way that any type of warranty or technical support can be in place.

  • Companies like Red Hat Software (https://www.redhat.com) Offer Open Source solutions that are packaged with a technical support and warranty. This way they can charge money for it.

Positive of Open Source

  • Promotes a community based on information sharing

  • No cost alternative to expensive software programs

  • Based on the idea that making source code available will encourage users to make a product better

    Self Critique Project 2-

I plan on designing Hollandersauce.com, a loving knick name I have had for some time, and also the name of my Twitter account. It began because I used to work with someone who’s last name was Gacka, and thus I started calling him Gacka-mole. He coined the shortened version of Hollandaise Sauce creating Hollandersauce. I choose this party because it is a unique play on words of my last name but also both my full name, and alias of KatieZ had been taken.

I will be following the laws of simplicity and beginning researching simple designs and layouts first. The first one I found that directly related to what I was doing was brynnshepard.com. She is a college student wanting to display her versatility. I really like the square features that you can click on to get to her different projects. The navigation is very simple but it’s almost fun to click through her thumbnails to read about her different projects. I would like to include similar thumbnails and break up my different accomplishments.

From the homepage, I would like to include a page for my resume, a separate page for my graphic design work, a third for past events and accomplishments and finally a fourth with some sort of current projects and news page.

My personal learning objectives in addition to the graded requirements, is to understand how to place my objects correctly. I have been having initial trouble in understanding how the concept of formatting is applied when all of my code runs line per line. I understand adding in a height and width controls an object, but I need to learn about boundaries and how to allow centering.

The mock-ups I created in Photoshop before hand served as excellent skeletons for me to build my pages into. http://katieznms.blogspot.com/2010/05/project-2-update.html. The part of the website I felt worked most successful is the images used to flip from page to page. I really liked that element in the beginning and I feel like it makes a lot of sense. I would have maybe wanted to add a few more design elements, but I did want to keep it minimal. I also need improvement in validation. I really learned the most by doing trial and error. I feel like my skills grew tremendously and I was very surprised and the amount of things I got stuck at, but was able to figure out the problem and solve it. I really wished I had a better understanding of CSS in the regards of centering all of your objects, and also how to fix the problems I had with validation. Overall im happy with my site, but very much look forward to tweaking it to look a bit better! I lost a few <hr>'s in the uploading process.
